50 years ago, the BBC was worth watching and was seen as politically independent. It would not have mocked the democratic majority for going against the popular opinion amongst it's Guardian reading staff. That's the important part. National anthem aside (I've never been a fan of it), I think the beeb were far more impartial back then.

I think calling two decisions made nearly half a century apart hypocrisy is a bit pointless. Most of the people who banned the song originally are probably dead by now. I wonder if Jimmy Saville was offended half a century ago, what with him being chummy with the Royals? I see GB News now play the national anthem before their breakfast television show. I would prefer Jerusalem on something by Edward Elgar personally, but hey ho. I have no idea what Savile might have thought about anything during his life. But like anyone else that might have had a say, he's also (thankfully in his case) dead. In fact, he really proves my point. What was happening in the BBC 50 years ago & what's happening now can't be joined together & called hypocricy. It's on a par with saying they are hypoctites because they used to make presenters wear full dinner jackets even on the radio & now they don't. Or they used to have to have a full-blown Old Etonian accent & now they don't.

I actually respect the beeb for playing it on both occasions, but I still feel they are far less impartial than they were back then. During the war, the BBC actually employed more people with regional accents because they were more difficult for the Germans to mimic.

National anthem aside (I've never been a fan of it), I think the beeb were far more impartial back then. Definitely. Even programs like HIGNFY were satire and not just political digs at anyone right of centre. We had countless comedy sketch shows which were funny, not just box ticking like the Irish man in a dress, or "Citizen Khan". Staff were selected in ability, not box ticking. People didn't resent paying a licence fee. I stopped years ago and switched to streaming TV only.

I bet all the BBC executives from 1977 who have been dead 30 years are turning in their graves

I lived on that road in Egerton in the mid 80's. Bedsit land. James Mason's old house and Roger Bannister lived on there as well.

Mason took his time but with Bannister it was all done in under 4 minutes?

I'm surprised they haven't changed the name of Long Fallas Crescent in Briggus.....perhaps to Long Fallas Rise!

Some of these establishments just want to get a spot on News at Ten if you ask me.
In any case, all a trigger warning amounts is saying that there's stuff in here you might not like. If the poor, spoilt little darlings who have barely seen the world beyond Daddy's garage are likely to be upset by probably the least erotic naughty bits you'll ever find in a book, then good luck to them when they meet the real world.

It's real world all right. The dystopian future predicted in 1984 is happening right now, without a shadow of a doubt. Ironic, then, that those participating in it might be wish to be protected from thinking about it.
