Probably something they'd been contemplating for a while and the papers/ news channels being full of something else became a perfect opportunity to do it.
Hard to quantify what a PR disaster this is for the company. Suppose time will tell on that. The public might be outraged but do they care enough to not use P&O if theyre the cheapest, most convenient option to get across the channel or wherever?

Personally, I've used the Portsmouth Santander route a couple of times - paid about £300 quid, which makes it around the same cost as driving through France and using the eurotunnel, and I'd use it again if the price was right. If I was travelling through France though, I'd always use the Eurotunnel anyway.
