uk.news.yahoo.com/midget-gems-renamed-disability-campaigner-161201776.htmlI absolutely love a Lion Midget Gem. You Cleck boys will know all about them, now owned by Tangerine Confectionery in Blackpool I think who must have bought the Lion brand back off of Cadbury's/Nestle?? What will they do. I also love a Fruit Salad. Not to be mistaken for any other inferior Midget Gem. Especially the "barrats" ones. I used to love Black Jacks, too, by the same people who did the Fruit Salads. I'm old enough to remember when they were eight for a penny, so 10 pence sorted you out with a proper bag load. My teeth are still paying the price. Perhaps its politically correct karma.

Clearly Black Jacks are racist and Fruit Salads are homophobic.
Cant believe they get away with such obviously insulting brand names.

Strangely my Grandma had a sweetshop and yet I don't have a single filling.
I cant remember them being eight(!!) for a penny but I do remember 2 Mojo's for 1p and therefore the Jack Dee "mojo" sketch.

No - All my own. My wisdom teeth have gone though, 2 pulled out, 2 never came, so that explains a lot.

Quote is from the "What's that all about" thread - I thought this point would be better visited here: There seem to be a lot of people like that these days TBH. Maybe there's a pretty serious mental health crisis going on right now, given the sharp decline in tolerance of different ideas & cultures over the last few years. How much of the mental health crisis might be just 'old-fashioned' stress, re-packaged? And some of the real article may be down to drug abuse....marijuana triggering psychosis, for example (Peter Hitchen is fond of linking strong weed to acts of terrorism, and those mass school killings). Drug useage seems to be growing....weed getting more potent....problems multiplying. I don't know, although I do think at least some of the polarisation of society & lack of tolerance for opposing views comes from a cultural shift. Captainblack & I were just exploring reasons that might underpin that, hence mental health being suggested as a potential contributing factor.

WRT the issue of midget gems being renamed, my thoughts: 1) I don't really care what they're called - they're over-rated sweets. 2) At least in this case, the person taking offense is actually a midget "mini", as opposed to someone of normal height just deciding off the top of their head that it might be offensive (although I still wonder how other people with dwarfism feel about having somebody else speak on their behalf). 3) "Dr Pritchard*, 35, a lecturer in disability and education said: “The word ‘midget’ is a form of hate speech"". No. No it isn't hate at all. At absolute worst, using outdated terminology is ignorance. Gaslighting people & telling them that "everyone hates you except me" is an unnecessarily cruel & fucking reprehensible thing to do. www.mirror.co.uk/money/marks--spencer-changes-name-25926884* There's probably a joke in there about a midget being called "Pritchard". I expect Dr Erin Pritchard would be no less useful on the football pitch than her namesake.

Thats the mindblowing stupidity of it.
that it isn't just the USE of the word that she finds offensive if its being used toward a person with dwarfism... its the word itself. So in her mind, even using the word in a totally acceptable way ( such as midget gems ) is now unacceptable.
And companies are so utterly shit scared of being accused of some sort of discrimination , even in such an obviously stupid way, that they meekly just go along with it and change their brand name.
Really wish these morons would just take a fucking day off.

Was told if you’re having a conversation with someone and someone else overhears and is offended then there can be disciplinary action. I thought wow wtf. Since then those offended cunts have taken over the world.

They have indeed and its mystifying. Must account for such a small proportion of the population but their influence and power is incredible nowadays. Literally everyone kow tows to them including politicians, the police, the army, businesses, sports, media, celebs...
We live in an environment of fear akin to what it must have been like under medieval religious intolerance 600 years ago. You wont be burned at the stake anymore for ( woke ) heresy , but your career and reputation will be.

You wont be burned at the stake anymore for ( woke ) heresy , but your career and reputation will be. Don't you think though that what you're saying proves my point? There's really nothing new under the Sun. There has always been a form of political correctness around that can ruin or kill you if you cross it. It might be driven by the King, the Lord of your manor, the factory owner or liberals in academia with nothing better to do. But some group or other always shuffles its way to the top & starts to make a lot of noise about something & threatens those who don't comply. I think what is different this time over & above other times is that this kind of agenda has arisen from a broad background of free speech. In the past, if I was a peasant & put a message on whatever the equivalent of Middle Ages Facebook was saying Lord McBastard has upset me by stealing my cabbages, I wouldn't get 100 likes & an apology from My Lord.
In truth, we are (if anything) experiencing the consequences of a century or so whereby free speech was broadly the norm & 40 or 50 years where our law-makers have been influenced to some extent by moral drivers as well as political expediency or vested interest. If you like, what we actually have is free speech on acid.
So all that our Professor of Finding Nasty Words has done is to exercise her free speech. Either people agree with her, raise they eyes at her or disagree with her. The fact that we can all moan about it in a very public environment shows that there is no threat to free speech. I suspect that many people with dwarfism would say to your face that they don't like that word. If, for example, there had been a black chewy sweet in the 50s called n**ger gems or something, that name would have quietly changed a long time ago. I don't deny it's a tricky issue, & every time something like this crops up there is a Pavlovian response. I also think that there are people who are actively seeking out issues for public attention & that probably a lot of people with dwarfism might never have given a second thought to what the sweets are called. Many maybe even joked about it. Until I hear from a wider group of people, it still seems to me to be more about attention-seeking & less about language, and I remain worried about erosion of language in the wider sense, but I suppose time will tell.

I hadn't really put this story in the bracket of 'freedom of speech' to be honest. Not sure its about that. More 'freedom to be offended', which is very current in these times. Think it shows the power of social media now. 30 years ago this silly woman might have decided that the word 'midget' is unacceptable, even in such an obviously inoffensive use of the word. Shed have probably written a letter to a paper and to the sweet company and I imagine they'd both have simply ignored her as a crank. We wouldn't be discussing this as we'd never have been aware of it. Nowadays she's given exposure on the internet and it quickly becomes a 'story'... so the sweet company crap themselves that they might be seen as intolerant or discriminatory in some way, and spinelessly change their sweets name, thanking her for educating them. You can almost smell the fear in the statement they released! If it is a freedom of speech issue, then its a very one sided one. She can have hers, ,, but can you imagine the furore if the company had theirs and it was to tell her to bugger off and stop being so stupid. With so much fear about now, they dont have the same freedom of speech... they HAVE to say what they are now expected to say. If they said anything else, a whole world of woke shite would land on their doorstep.
