If he resigned could there be an early general election? There is a possibility, but nothing to force it. Should be imho

If he resigned could there be an early general election? Highly unlikely unless the new leader was very confident of a decent majority. Most mid-term PMs in my lifetime pretty much ran on as long as they could (Callaghan, Major, & Brown are the ones that spring to mind). May was the exception but that was really down to the fact she had a very small majority & miscalculated that she could increase it.

Cant see anyway there'd be a general election. Theres no possible benefit to the government by calling one, only a big risk they'd lose, or at least have their big majority slashed.
Changing PM isn't a reason to have one. People vote for the party and its ethos more than the person at the helm... which , if there was a reason to call an early GE would be it for me.. the way this tory government has proved to be so unlike what voters expect from a tory government... high taxation, huge state control, huge public spending..etc
As a Tory voter id want to see the next PM in place for the best part of 3 years and then see how the job they do gets rated in a GE. As it stands, with Johnson as leader Id be abstaining probably unless labour talk their way into me fearing them in government more than I do now.

Harold McMillan was asked upon his appointment, what he feared most & famously replied "Events, dear boy, events." And that is precisely what has done for BJ. He undoubtedly possesses leadership skills & thrives when, in his own words, he is 'getting things done'; Brexit & the vaccine programme were made for him really. But he utterly lacks the kind of hands-on management skills needed to run a country. I suspect his whole upbringing is of a man used to doing what he wants & letting others clean up the mess, & I doubt very much that he was able to conflate what was going on out there in the real world with his own personal actions.
I think what happens next is going to tell us a lot about the state of British politics. I think deep down even the most die-hard Tories probably suspected that he might end up a bit of a liability, but of course none of us could have foreseen the events that would trigger his decline. But what we need in politics is at least some appearance of integrity at the top. I know that in truth if you are over-burdened with integrity you probably don't even get near the top, but I really want to believe that some sort of values, or at least illusion of values, still guide how our politics works. I hope that he will do the honourable thing & walk. In a way that's shooting myself in the foot as he is currently Labour's top electoral asset by a mile. If I was a Tory I think I'd want rid asap, pretty much for the reason Slapps outlines, give Rishi whoever it is time for all this to turn into chip paper & decide the next election on future events rather than whatever mishaps BJ can conjure up between now & then.

Who do you think is the best option to be the next leader ? No one stands out for me. I can't see a GE either, nothing to gain everything to lose for the tories.

Sunak would be the front runner I think, but whether he'd be the best option is a different question. Truss would be the other lead name I guess. Doubt it would be any of the other big names, but could see someone less well known come through the ranks maybe. Like Deepspace says I think it needs to be someone who at least gives a believable impression of honesty and integrity. They went from Theresa May to Boris which is a really polar opposite move in terms of character and charisma. From dull as ditchwater to a whirling dervish of gaffs, faux pas, and headline grabbing oafishness. To be honest I think something in-between would be what they need. Not a robotic charism vacuum who mentions rolling down a grassy hill as the one time they really let themselves 'go', but not an unpredictable burden either. But they have to be believable and honest more than anything.. as much as any politician ever is anyway. And return to core Tory party values,,, because ,perhaps through circumstance rather than choice, this has been the most 'socialist' government we've had in many a long decade.

BoJo's potential departure focuses the mind on just what a woeful choice of leaders....indeed, senior politicians/ministers...are present in our political class. Across all UK parties. And things aren't any/much better in many other countries either. Worrying times.

Does anyone on here keep going over to DATM to try and derail threads like some spurned schoolgirl, or is it just one way??
I occasionally have a look at the transfer bit to see if anyones got any rumours but havent been looking at other threads, so was just wondering.
