I’d heard rumours of the lad from Japan but it seemed a “bit left field” for us - obviously never heard about him prior to this but looks promising, however you could have said the same with the Speed Twins a few years ago or indeed Zico from Thailand when Rubery was here, the thing is it’s looking good even allowing for LO’B to be leaving which makes it all the more puzzling with Carlos going ? We had 5 very 'saleable' players. O'Brien, Toffolo, Russell, Thomas and Nicholl If we go into this season having only lost one of them, then Imo thats not a bad result at all. I like Obrien but he's far from a complete player. Tonnes of energy and great at breaking forward with the ball, but theres very rarely an end product.. a killer pass or a goal. If we got £8m or more then to me that will be a great price. Even losing Obrien, looking at the signings we've made, I'd say our squad looks stronger now than it did last season.. and yeah id agree, it is puzzling why CC would jump ship like he did. Bielsa's influence perhaps? he is renowned for walking away from jobs the first time he doesnt get everything he wants. The only point I’d argue with is £8M being a great price, when you compare to others in the Championship I genuinely think that’s way too low, Spence from Boro after a season at Notts for £20M, even in the PL, does Phillips do much more, certainly not with goal scoring and he went for £50M.

Think Phillips is more of a holding midfielder than Obrien is, so end product isn't as key...plus of course he's proven in the PL and a regular starter for England. His price is also effected by who's buying him.. Man City will generally expect to have to pay a 'Man City' surcharge on any player they sign. I think Spence is overpriced at that ( its actually £12.5m with potential add ons taking it up to £20m ) , but these attacking wing backs are now so crucial to teams that theres a premium to pay on the position...like there has always been for strikers. With parachute payments ended and Hoyle seemingly not prepared to carry the club financially to the extent he used to, then I think selling one of our assets was always a necessity this summer. Very relieved it isn't Nicholls as there must have been a lot of clubs impressed by him...looks like its Obrien.. sad to see him leave but needs must. I doing think he's such an outstanding player that we dont stand a reasonable chance of replacing him well enough.

Jack Rudoni confirmed on Town web site, hopefully he can be a good replacement for O'Brien. I see Hudlin has joined AFC Wimbledon on a season long loan which I'm sure would have smoothed the path of the Rudoni transfer. I posted on the other Rudoni thread yesterday with the latest I’d heard that LO’B was going to Notts for £12M ( higher than the reported £10M buy out clause then this lad was his replacement) so it’s actually quite a bold move to bring him before that’s confirmed, unless it’s announced later on today ? When we beat Brizzle and sold Booth I seem to remember Stuart and two others (Payton & Morrison) were announced the same day but it might have been a day or so later but I’m certain Booth went first. Maybe I'm missing something here, but why would a club make an offer that is more than a buy-out clause? Or - do we think perhaps the reporting of that clause was inaccurate?

Looking at his data, Nakayama seems to have gradually improved across the season - despite his team finishing rock bottom of a division which is probably broadly equivalent to straddling the bottom half of Championship and top half of League 1 once you remove the top 3 or 4 clubs. Will definitely be a step up for him, but the spur of a World Cup should help. He seems to be positioned as a left sided defender, effectively replacing Sarr, challenging/ahead of REG, but I wonder if the reality is that he's a replacement for another player who hasn't quite left us yet...as if you go back and watch footage of him playing in the Olympics, he's basically Harry Toffolo.

Yes, I made the same point yesterday, I’m simply passing on reports I’ve read, yesterday it was from EFL 72 - they said £12M increased offer, so either the buy out for £10M we’ve heard of is wrong or the increased bid is. Or both of course.

As ever it’s all about opinions, whatever value we put on him won’t make a difference to what he’s sold for anyway, I just think if you’re selling the family silver best to get top dollar for it rather than doing it on the cheap. Of course a few years ago ( how long is it now since Rhodes went, 10 years? ) we could only imagine selling a player for £8M !

We'll never know what we get for O'Brien because the fee will be undisclosed. Personally I think 8 million is ok and if he is the only one who leaves we will have had a decent transfer window, I'd rather lose O'Brien than Nicholls.

As far as I know (I stand to be corrected) but if a buy out clause is set and two teams offer that amount it’s then a fight between them as to the wages they offer rather than increased bids?

In a minor whoooooosh moment, T69 was implying you'd suggested Notts County had made an offer. (although I like to wind Forest fans up by calling them Notts Forest too!).
