First day of the season what are we expecting ? Both teams have new managers and a fair amount of new players so personally I'm not expecting too much but win lose or draw I won't get carried away. Very difficult to predict tonight but I'm going for a 2-1 defeat but no surprise if we won or drew. UTT

Yeah tough one to call.
Not really sure what to expect from either team. 2 new managers and both have lost key players over the summer .. Burnley seem to have lost pretty much ALL their main players, McNeil left yesterday and even that striker Cornet isn't playing as he's about to leave apparently.
Might be a good time to play them.. so Ill go for a Town win 2-0.
Lets hope it goes better than last seasons first home game also against a newly relegated club!!

Well that was a game of two halves!
First half, started brightly despite what looked like a very boring XI...that last barely 10mins before Burnley spent the remainder of the half utterly dominating us.
Second half never really got going, but the introduction of Anjorin changed the feel of the game entirely, Burnley continued to have long spells of possession, but our direct running felt really promising, until the game fizzled out in the final 15-20mins down to time wasting (two bookings for time wasting for Burnley, the first as early as the 58th minute), the disruption of 5 sub stoppages and a few brief injuries breaking up the play.
The post saved us after a free kick rounded what looked like a poorly positioned wall, to keep the scoreline very respectable, but in truth Burnley won this very easily.
Some positives for us...it looks like Anjorin's Coventry performance wasn't just a one-off. Kasumu looked pretty impressive in his 15 mins, coming on, getting carded, and going off injured, in amongst some aggressive pressure on the ball. I know he only had 5 or so mins on the pitch, but I thought Nakayama already showed signs of being an absolute star, energetic about the pitch, read the game calmly, and pulled out an absolutely wicked pass under pressure to pick out Anjorin on the half way line that took about 4 Burnley players out of the game...think he's going to be a game changer once he gets going, like a defender version of Aaron Mooy!
Sorba and Anjorin is going to be a really positive asset when they start to build more understanding - we probably aren't going to score as many from set pieces having lost Sarr and Pearson (out for a 'very long' time) from the team, so hopefully they can create some proper goal scoring chances when they start to warm up with the battering ram approach.
Disappointments were mostly predictable. Koroma seemed worse than last season. Rudoni didn't really live up to the hype, was either out muscled or simply couldn't cope with the pace of the game, not sure which, hopefully he can step up over the next month or two, as there were a few good signs, Duane Holmes is still not very good, and REG hasn't really moved back to where he was when he first broke through...plays like a U19 being given a break in mens football - he's 23 now.
Lots of promise - Burnley were simply very good, 2 or perhaps 3-0 wouldnt have been unfair, but with our second half endeavour we've walked away with something positive to build on in the run up to the Birmingham game. Nothing to be too concerned about on first showing.

0-1 really flattered us we could/should have been dead and buried by half time. They were miles better than us in every department, we couldn't keep the ball, didn't track runners and were all over the place in the first half. Second half we improved a bit for bringing the subs on but hardly threatened, I can't remember their keeper making a save, it was a very poor night for DS and hopefully he will make changes for the next game, that starting 11 was piss poor and a few looked out of their depth. As poor as we were we still have 45 games to go so no panic from me , I just hope DS is a quick learner , I'm sure we can do a lot better than last night.UTT

Nothing to be too concerned about on first showing. Agree with pretty much all that , except for Rudoni who I thought looked lively and quite impressive when he came on. You forgot a major ( and predictable ) disappointment in Ruffels, who just isn't a championship standard player IMO. Wasnt when he played last season and last night looked way out of his depth. We do have other options at left back and whichever one we choose, it has to be an improvement really. Think Schofield deliberately gave the existing players the start last night.. you have the shirt after last season.. can you keep it? The answer from a few of them is 'no!' Ill be amazed if Tino, Nakayama and Rudoni dont start at Birmingham. Maybe Boyle too. Leave out Ruffels, Koroma, Holmes and maybe REG. Sorba deserves patience after last season, but if he puts in another performance like that then he needs dropping too, as he was shocking. Presume Aarons is unfit ( when isn't he?) but maybe Rowe is available? I liked the look of him before.

Agree on that, the difficulty with Ruffels is that REG isn't good enough that Nakayama can simply replace Ruffels, as we've know idea if Boyle is any better than REG.
Caveat I didn't highlight Ruffels too much as I thought he was exposed a lot by Koroma ahead of him who seemed to have no idea what he was supposed to be doing (and whatever he was doing, was simply rubbish).
Also, what ever happened to Pat Jones? I know he was incredibly young, but in the minutes he had last January, he looked to be far and away the best of all the prospects we've seen so far.
Ideally for me, Nakayama plays in place of Ruffels and totally eradicates any memory of Toffolo within weeks, there's something very very classy looking about the way he moves about the pitch and uses the ball, that seemed obvious in only 5mins.
And then fingers crossed REG or Boyle step up, its not as though we're playing Burnley every week.

Sure we've just extended pat Jones's contract. Or maybe I imagined that?? Not sure now.
I like REG at centre back from before his loan, though he didnt cover himself in any glory in that game. Barnes is an aggressive wiley old striker and thought he bullied REG a bit, and he isnt a kid anymore so hasn't got that excuse. But it was a tough game for both our centre backs as Hogg and Russell in front of them were just getting passed around so easily.
Burnley were excellent other than their finishing, surprisingly so after losing so many key players.
Think we'll get a better idea of where we are after the Birmingham game.. think we'll put out a better side and against a more average opposition.

Early signs are we're going to struggle to get above bottom 😞 Very similar to last season, except with worse defenders on the pitch and a lack of any kind of off-field direction or plan. Too soon, and too high a level for Schofield - needs to lose the job quickly before it becomes irrecoverable, unfortunately. And in the meantime, play the actual best defender instead of putting him in a queue behind 5 others 😡
